Every technique has some requirements, for a special technique we are ought to do something and not to do something. In SEO you have to find out carefully what you need to do and what is detrimental for SEO. I will discuss it here shortly.
1. Do not keep the background color and text color same. If you do

that search engine will assume you are cheating people from viewing

the actual content of the web page. Then they will penalize your site.
2. Do not keep bad link.
3. Do not keep poor quality content. I mean as the pages would be read

by the human being, so keep the content grammatically correct.
4. Do not keep a eye irritating background. It will attract the viewer at

first then make him or her leave the page.
5. Do not keep the title of the page blank.

SEO is needed to upgrade your website to a commercial class. Commercial class means you can use your website for commercial purposes. You can buy a domain and make a website, give some add to promote some products. That does not mean that your site is in the commercial class. Because if the site is not optimized for the search engine you will not be able to promote your product. SEO techniques are urgent for building a business class website.
SEO can boost up your income. If search engine optimization is done properly for a website, then the website is expected to appear in the search result in the first page for a proper niche. So when people search keywords those are related to your site, they will see your site on the first page and many of them will go through your website. If you use ppc (pay per click), add sense or other affiliate program on your site people will happen to click on add or other affiliate link. And you will get money.

But now a day, the number of websites is so huge that people love to use Search engine. And I have told before that SEO is needed and tremendously needed to make your webpage appear on the search result.
If any one wants to gain popularity on the internet, I think SEO is not so necessary for him or her. But if he or she wants to be popular by making posts, comments and other writing tool, he or she need to maintain the quality of the writing, which is a part of SEO.
